• According to reports, the Venezuelan opposition campaign group Comando ConVzla has called for a rally near the Organization of American States (OAS) building in Washington, DC at 14:00 (local time) on January 6. 
• The demonstration aims to express solidarity with Venezuela’s opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia Gonzalez during his visit to the OAS to meet with President Joe Biden. Edmundo seeks support ahead of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro’s inauguration on January 10 following the disputed Venezuelan presidential elections on July 28, 2024.

Following the disputed victory of Maduro, a series of protests have been recorded across the USA in late 2024, including in Washington, DC on August 17 and New York City, NY on August 18 among other cities. Most of these protests have witnessed a turnout in the low-to-mid thousands, considering the notable presence of the Venezuelan diaspora in the USA supporting the opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democratica, to which Gonzalez belongs.

FORECAST : This coupled with the significant social media traction for the protest call amid Gonzalez’s visit, the upcoming rally is expected to witness similar turnouts in the low-to-mid thousands. Given precedent, the protest is anticipated to transpire peacefully without incidents of unrest. Given that the rally is slated outside a building where high-profile visits of Biden and Gonzalez are scheduled, a bolstered security presence is anticipated in the vicinity of the protest location to monitor proceedings and regulate traffic. Therefore, significant disruptions to pedestrian and vehicular traffic are expected near the OAS building during the afternoon hours on January 6.
