  • In Rabat, a demonstration will be held at Bab El Had Square.

Assessments & Forecast:

  1. The protests that began on September 27 have continued to gain momentum with the movement now entering its tenth day. Over this time, the youth-led movement has evolved into a widespread expression of frustration over issues such as corruption, unemployment, and declining living standards, alongside growing calls for governmental change.
  2. On October 5, dozens of demonstrators reportedly gathered in the El Fida district of Casablanca, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. Similarly, around one hundred people gathered outside the Parliament in Rabat. No incidents of violence were reported during these demonstrations.
  3. FORECAST: Based on current trends, a similar turnout, likely in the high dozens to low hundreds, is expected during protests on October 6 in Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech. These protests are likely to remain peaceful, particularly given that no violence has been reported from either protesters or security forces since October 2, and the fact that the GENZ212 organizers have consistently emphasized the importance of non-violence and civic responsibility. As a precautionary measure, the authorities are likely to bolster security around key locations, such as the Parliament in Rabat. However, the possibility of unrest and violence cannot be entirely ruled out. Scuffles and the deployment of riot control measures remain possible, particularly if security forces are perceived as using disproportionate force against protesters. As the protests get underway, disruptions to travel are likely to be recorded in and around protest sites across the country.

Recommendations:

Those operating or residing in Morocco on October 6 and over the coming days are advised to avoid all travel to the vicinity of protest sites due to the associated risk of unrest, violence, and detention.
