MENA Tactical: Authorities in Iraq, Israel, Turkey issue warnings due to extreme temperatures between August 8-14; remain cognizant of updates by authorities

Current Situation:

The meteorological authorities in Iraq, Israel, and Turkey have forecast heat waves and the potential for forest fires over the coming days.

Iraq
  • Iraq’s Meteorology Department has forecasted high temperatures across the country from August 8-10 with temperatures rising to 49 degrees in Baghdad.
Israel
  • The Israel Meteorology Service (IMS) has issued red, orange, and yellow warnings due to heat wave in several areas across Israel on August 8-14.  
  • An orange warning for heat wave and extreme temperatures has been issued across the country, including in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem from 10:00 (local time) on August 8 until 20:00 on August 14.  
  • A red warning has been issued in the southern Golan, eastern Upper Galilee, eastern Lower Galilee, Beit Shean Valley, Hula Valley, Kinneret Valley, northeastern Samaria, Jordan Valley, northern Judean Desert and Dead Sea, southern Judean Desert and Dead Sea, northeastern Negev, eastern Negev, southern Negev and Eilat Mountains, Arava and Gulf of Eilat and southern Arava from 10:00 on August 8 until 04:00 on August 9.  
  • An orange warning is in effect from 10:00 until 20:00 on August 8 in northern Golan Heights, the western Lower Galilee, the Jezreel Valley, the Ramot Menashe, the central mountains, northern Samaria, southern Samaria, the Judean Desert and the northwestern Negev.  
  • Similarly, a yellow warning has been issued in the Western Upper Galilee, Mount Carmel, the Northern Coastal Plain, the Central and Southern Coastal Plain, the Lowlands, the Western Negev and the Negev Mountains from 10:00 until 20:00 on the same day.
Turkey
  • The General Directorate of Forestry has issued a fire risk warning across the country due to high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity. 
  • Additionally, the Directorate has urged citizens to not burn waste materials and light fires in open areas.

Recommendations:

  1. Those operating or residing in Iraq, Israel, and Turkey between August 8-14 are advised to adhere to the authorities’ updates and maintain heightened vigilance due to warnings for elevated temperatures.  
  2. In Israel and Turkey, it is advised to remain cognizant of the elevated risk for forest fires over the coming days due to the heat stress. 
  3. During extreme heat waves, stay indoors and limit direct sun exposure when possible. Drink sufficient fluids, such as water or sports beverages, but avoid alcoholic or sweetened beverages, and eat light meals. Dress in loose-fitting light-colored clothing that covers the skin. Avoid strenuous physical activity.
