MENA Alert (UPDATE): Two state-linked Iranian news agencies report during the night hours of May 7 that earlier incident on Qeshm Island resulted from exchange of fire between Iranian, ‘enemy’ forces; closely monitor regional developments
Current Situation:
- As of 23:30 (Iran time) on May 7, two state-linked news agencies, including Iran’s public broadcaster (Irib), reported that the earlier explosion at the Bahman Port of Iran’s Qeshm Island was a result of an exchange of fire between Iranian and “enemy forces.”
- Iran’s public broadcaster also reported that “following a US forces attack on an Iranian oil tanker, US forces in the Strait of Hormuz came under Iranian missile fire.
- Some Iranian reports floated speculation that the UAE was involved in the incident. Nonetheless, as of the time of writing, Official Iranian sources have not released any formal accusation against Abu Dhabi.
- Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency denied there was a security incident in the city of Sirik, reporting that sounds of explosions in the area were a result of IRGC warning shots against unauthorized ships.
