Lebanon Tactical: Public holiday, road closures slated for Saint Maroun’s Day on February 9; allot for disruptions

Current Situation:

  • Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has announced that February 9 will be a public holiday in honor of Saint Maroun’s Day. Public offices, institutions, and municipalities across the country will be closed for the day.
  • The Lebanese Internal Security Forces announced road closures and traffic measures in Beirut for Saint Maroun’s Day. A festive Mass will take place at Saint George Cathedral in Downtown Beirut at 11:00 (local time) on February 9, with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in attendance.
  • Authorities announced the closure of roads in the entire vicinity of Downtown Beirut starting from 06:00 on February 9 until the end of the Mass. Traffic will be diverted towards the sea line and towards the Ring.
  • Authorities will enforce parking restrictions from 00:01 on February 8, with vehicle passage prohibited from 06:00 on February 9 until the conclusion of Mass. The affected roads include:
    • From the Naval base up to Borj al-Ghazal
    • From Borj al-Ghazal to UN-ESCWA office
    • From UN- ESCWA office towards Riad al-Solh Street to al-Saifi
    • Aazarieh area
    • Al-Saifi area
    • Martyrs’ Square
    • From the al-Nahar Press intersection to al-Amin Mosque/Bechara al-Khoury Street (Ministry of Finance exit)
    • From Nazlet Zion-Sodeco towards Downtown Beirut (traffic will be diverted right towards Borj al-Ghazal)
    • From Borj al-Ghazal intersection towards al-Saifi
  • Residents have been advised to adhere to the instructions and directives of security personnel and to pay attention to the traffic signs placed on the roads to facilitate smoother traffic and avoid congestion.
