Kazakhstan Alert: Passenger plane crashes in field near Aktau on December 25; avoid nonessential travel to area

Current Situation:

  • Per emerging reports, a passenger plane crashed in fields near Aktau Airport (SCO), Mangystau Region, during the early afternoon hours (local time) on December 25. 
  • The plane, which reportedly belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines, was carrying 72 individuals on board. The airline was flying from Baku to Grozny, Russia.  
  • Early unconfirmed reports indicate that 66 individuals were killed, with six passengers surviving. Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing, as of writing.
