Israel Tactical (UPDATE): Authorities reportedly prepare to close Highway 1 at 15:00 on April 23 due to ongoing wildfire; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

Current Situation:

  • Authorities reportedly announced preparations to close Highway 1 in the direction of Jerusalem during the afternoon hours (local time) on April 23 due to intense wildfires in the Beit Shemesh area. 
  • Affected areas due to the wildfire include Tarum, Taoz, Mesilat Zion, and the Sha’ar HaGai area. 
  • Reports indicate that police have evacuated Eshtaol and Mesilat Zion, two central Israeli towns near Beit Shemesh, as brush fires continue to burn on the outskirts of Jerusalem. 
  • Reports indicate that the two fire centres are the Eshtaol forest and the Shephelah area near Highway 6.  
  • Firefighting operations remain ongoing.

Recommendations:

  1. Those operating or residing in Israel and intending to travel along Highway 1 on April 23 are advised to remain aware of the authorities’ instructions due to the ongoing fire and firefighting operations. 
  2. In case of a wildfire in your area, prepare for further evacuations should it be ordered. If evacuation is ordered, do so immediately. Return only when authorities instruct that it is safe to do so.
  3. Do not attempt to drive through affected areas or outrun the fire; adhere to authorities’ directives. 
  4. Create a procedure and plan for employee behavior in case of a wildfire, then instruct and test employees on these procedures. Inform employees of local emergency and evacuation plans. 
  5. If possible, confirm that places of stay have working generators in case of power outages while packing sufficient batteries and flashlights. 
  6. Charge essential electronic devices such as cellular phones, laptops, and tablet computers ahead of the planned power outage, and initiate energy-saving functions on these devices as needed.
