Israel & Palestinian Territories Alert: PM Netanyahu announces halt of humanitarian aid entering Gaza Strip during morning hours on March 2; monitor regional developments

Current Situation:

  • Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu’s Office stated during the morning hours (local time) on March 2 that Israel will halt the entry of humanitarian aid and supplies to the Gaza Strip.
  • It stated that this is due to Hamas’ reported refusal to accept a proposal to temporarily extend Phase One of the ceasefire deal, which expired on March 1, as proposed by US President Donald Trump’s Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
  • Israel accepted Witkoff’s proposal, which includes the extension of the ceasefire deal during Ramadan (February 28 until March 29) and Passover (April 12-19). On the first day of this proposed deal, half of the living and deceased Israeli hostages would be released, and the remaining hostages would be freed if a permanent ceasefire agreement is reached.
  • Hamas reportedly stated, following Netanyahu’s announcement, that Israel’s adoption of Witkoff’s proposal is “cheap extortion, a war crime” and an attempt to avoid negotiations for Phase Two of the ceasefire deal. It reportedly affirmed that negotiations are the only way to retrieve remaining Israeli hostages from Gaza.
  • Israel’s army radio reported that the government has authorized the extension and expansion of a special order allowing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to mobilize up to 400,000 reservists until the end of May 2025 on March 2.
  • According to Israel’s public broadcaster, one individual was killed and another wounded in an Israeli airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip’s Beit Hanoun area during the late morning hours on March 2.
