• The Centro de Operacoes e Resiliencia (COR, the Operation and Resilience Center), the municipal office responsible for ongoing developments in Rio de Janeiro city, RJ, reported ongoing security operations in the Complexo do Alemao and Penha neighborhoods, in the city’s North Zone, during the morning hours (local time) of January 24.
• According to reports, authorities have deployed over 500 police officers in both neighborhoods, along with armored trucks and two helicopters. Gunshots and the use of grenades have been also reported during the security operation.
• The operation reportedly aims to target infrastructure allegedly used by the Comando Vermelho (CV) criminal group and disrupt their activities related to cargo theft. As of this writing, one civilian and one security officer were killed.
• Due to the ongoing security operations, at least 15 bus lines operating in both neighborhoods have altered their regular routes from the morning hours of January 24.

Those residing or operating in Rio de Janeiro on January 24 are advised to avoid all travel to the Complexo do Alemao and Penha neighborhoods due to the ongoing security operations and potential for violent retaliations.
