Americas Tactical: TS John to further weaken after making landfall in Guerrero, Mexico while PTC Nine forecast to strengthen as of September 24; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

Tropical Storm John
- Tropical Storm John is currently situated 45 km northwest of Acapulco as of morning hours (local time) on September 24. After Hurricane John, as a Category 3 Hurricane, third highest on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, made landfall in Marquelia, Guerrero on September 23, it weakened into a tropical storm. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has also forecasted that TS John will weaken further into a Post-Tropical Cyclone with tropical depression-strength winds by 18:00 on September 24.
- The Comision Nacional del Agua (Conagua) has forecast TS John to cause “extraordinary” rainfall, greater than 250 millimeters in Oaxaca and Guerrero, and 150-250 millimeters in Veracruz and Chiapas. Additionally, intense rainfall between 75-150 millimeters has been forecast for Michoacan and Puebla.
- The Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (SMN) has also warned of wind gusts between 100-120 kmph and waves between 2-4 meters high in coastal Oaxaca. Wind gusts between 50-70 kmph and waves between 1-3 meters high have been forecast for the coasts of Guerrero and Chiapas.
- The NHC has warned of hurricane-force winds and a life-threatening storm surge in the aforementioned areas owing to TS John. In addition, life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides are forecast for southeast Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. The NHC has also issued a tropical storm warning for the east of Acapulco, Guerrero to Lagunas de Chacahua, Oaxaca.
- Authorities ordered the closure of ports of the Huatulco and Salina Cruz ports in Oaxaca, while multiple flights to and from the Puerto Escondido International Airport

- Potential Tropical Cyclone (PTC) Nine is currently located 120 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman islands as of September 24.
- The NHC has issued a tropical storm warning for Grand Cayman, Rio Lagartos to Tulum in Mexico, and Cuban provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Rio. PTC Nine is forecast to reach hurricane conditions on September 25 and reach the northeastern Gulf Coast on September 26.
- Furthermore, authorities in Florida have announced a State of Emergency due to Potential TC Nine in nine out of the 41 counties in the state.
