- In Brazil, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) has issued an orange alert (the second highest on a three-tier scale) for heavy rains between 50-100 millimeters a day and intense winds between 60 to 100 kilometers an hour in parts of Amapa, Espirito Santo, Maranhao, Minas Gerais, Para, Rio de Janeiro, and Tocantins states until 10:00 (local time) on January 4.
