Americas Tactical: Inclement weather conditions prompt warnings in Brazil, Canada, Chile, Paraguay, USA on January 20; remain cognizant of authorities’ updates

Current Situation

  • In Brazil, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) has issued an orange alert, the second highest in a three-tier alert system, for heavy rains impacting Amazonas, Goais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Para, Parana, Rondonia, Santa Catarina, and Sao Paulo states on January 20. Further, orange alerts for storms are also effective in Parana, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina on January 20.
  • In Canada, Environment Canada (EC) has issued red alerts, the highest on a three-tier scale, for extreme cold in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan; and snowfall in New Brunswick and parts of Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador on January 20. Further, EC has issued red alerts for blizzards in Northwest Territories and Nunavut; freezing rain in parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and a winter storm warning in Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island on January 20. 
  • In Chile, the Servicio Nacional de Prevencion y Respuesta ante Desastres (SENAPRED) has issued red alerts, the highest on three-tier scale, for forest fires in the communes of Quirihue and Trehuaco in the province of Itata in the Nuble Region on January 20. Additionally, red alerts issued on January 19 for forest fires in the Los Sauces commune in Araucania Region, in the San Esteban commune in Valparaiso Region, and in San Jose de Maipo commune in Region Metropolitana has been extended to January 20. 
  • In Paraguay, authorities have reported that an ongoing wildfire in the Banco San Miguel Ecological Reserve along the Bay of Asuncion has resulted in the evacuations of over 135 families and injuries to 45 others, as of January 19. The fires are reportedly along Avenida Costanera Norte, with firefighting efforts underway as of writing. Further, Oscar Andres Rodriguez Quinonez, the Mayor of Asuncion, announced that there was evidence indicating that the fires were premeditated actions by criminal entities.
  • In the USA, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings for parts of Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, DC, and West Virginia in the morning hours of January 20, southeast Texas until January 21, and in multiple regions in Alabama, northwest Florida, southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi until January 22.  
  • Further, NWS has issued freeze warnings for California for January 20 and until January 21 in northeast and northern Florida and southeast Georgia. Meanwhile, NWS has issued warnings for extreme cold for parts of North Carolina, Nebraska, and Texas on January 20, and in parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia through January 22.  
  • Heavy freezing spray warnings have been issued along Lake Erie from Avon Point in Ohio to Buffalo, New York, with additional warnings effective along parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana through January 22.  
  • Separately, the NWS has flagged extremely critical fire weather conditions, the highest alert on a three-tier scale, for much of Southern California, including the west of San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Susana Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains, and along the Malibu Coast due to strong Santa Ana Winds, effective through the morning hours of January 21. The Santa Ana winds are expected to reach speeds of 50-70mph, with some regions anticipated to record speeds up to 60-100mph.  
  • Hazardous winter weather conditions have prompted authorities to disrupt flight services in three airports in Houston, TX, as of January 20. Accordingly, all flight operations at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), and Ellington Airport (EFD) have been temporarily suspended from 00:01 on January 20 to January 21.  Further updates can be found here.
