Turkey Tactical: Nationwide commemorative events for ‘Ataturk Memorial Day’ slated on November 10; allot for disruptions

Current Situation:

  • Turkey will observe Ataturk Memorial Day on November 10, an annual event marking the 87th anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s death in 1938 and honoring his role as the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. 
  • To mark the day, nationwide commemorative ceremonies are slated in Turkey, including in Ankara and Izmir, from the morning hours (local time) of November 10.  
  • As a part of the event, nationwide ceremonies will follow state protocols and include wreath-laying ceremonies, cultural and sports events, exhibitions, and educational programs. 
  • At 09:05, a two-minute nationwide silence will be observed, accompanied by sirens.  
  • Members of the Cyclist Association, in coordination with Atasehir Municipality, are organizing a bike tour titled “On Our Ataturk’s Path.” The tour will start at 10:00 in Istanbul’s Atasehir and conclude at Ankara’s Anitkabir (mausoleum complex). 
  • Road closures in the vicinity of these ceremonies are anticipated.  

Ankara 

  • A wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled at Ankara’s Anitkabir (mausoleum complex) at 09:05 on November 10 as part of the state protocol commemorating Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s death anniversary. 
  • A commemoration program will also be held by the Ataturk Culture, Language, and History Supreme Institution. 
  • Additionally, multiple sports competitions are being organized across the city, beginning at 09:00. 
  • Ataturk Corner and book exhibitions will run from 09:00 to 18:00. 

Izmir 

  • A wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled at Republic Square from 08:55 to 09:10 on November 10. 
  • Following the ceremony, a memorial program is slated at the Sabanci Cultural Centre at 09:30. 
  • The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will organize a “Respect for Ataturk March” at 14:00, beginning at Kordon Children’s Park near Alsancak Port to Cumhuriyet Square.
