- The demonstration will be held to commemorate the anniversary of the July-August 2024 student-led mass movement in Bangladesh.
Assessments & Forecast:
- Attendance at the Bangladesh Hindu Mohashongho protest is likely to range in the high dozens to low hundreds based on the resonance over the issue amongst Hindu minority groups, coupled with the mobilization capabilities of the group. Whereas the participation at the Sonagazi Samity Dhaka’s protest is expected to reach between low-to-mid dozens based on the traction gained on social media. The turnout at the BNP’s demonstration is likely to reach between the high dozens to low hundreds, given the symbolic significance of the July-August student-led movement anniversary. Anticipating this, the authorities are expected to bolster security measures in the vicinity of the aforementioned protest locations as part of standard security protocol. These measures will include the deployment of police personnel and the setting up of barricades to monitor crowds.
- There remains a latent risk of scuffles between police and protesters, particularly should the latter be perceived as engaging in disruptive behaviors, such as blocking major thoroughfares or attempting to breach security measures. Should unrest occur, the police are liable to disperse crowds utilizing temporary detentions or baton charges. Localized disruptions to pedestrian and vehicular travel are anticipated in the vicinity of the aforementioned locations during the protest hours on August 1-3.
Recommendations:
Those operating or residing in Dhaka on August 1-3 are advised to maintain vigilance in the vicinity of the aforementioned locations due to the slated protests and associated risk of scuffles, while allotting for disruptions.
