Syria & Iraq Tactical (UPDATE): Flooding reported in parts of Syria, Iraq’s Anbar on high alert on May 27; avoid all travel to affected areas

Current Situation:

  • In Syria, emerging reports from May 27 indicate flooding in parts of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa in Syria, following a May 25 warning from authorities about increasing water levels along the Euphrates River banks in the Aleppo, Raqqa, and Deir Ezzor governorates.
  • In Iraq, the Anbar governor has declared a 72-hour state of alert across the governorate due to the risk of imminent flooding extending from the Syrian border through the city of al-Qaim, driven by elevated Euphrates River water levels in Syria.
  • Authorities have also deployed emergency teams to low-lying areas across Anbar and urged residents in flood-prone locations to evacuate.
